Rooting Resilience

With funding from the Department for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE -formerly Status of Women Canada), DAWN will begin a 5 year pilot project entitled Rooting Resilience: Peer Support for Women with Disabilities. Research confirms that peer support is effective in helping women survivors of violence. However, there are no violence prevention programs, sexual assault centres or shelters specifically for women with disabilities despite the fact that they have the highest rates of violence. This project will examine and test effective models of peer support for women with disabilities, along with our project partners, Women at the Centre, British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (BCANDS), and Independent Living Canada.
