Research and Communications Assistant

The DisAbled Women’s Network (DAWN) / Réseau d’action de femmes handicapées (RAFH) Canada is a national cross-disability feminist organization serving women with disabilities and Deaf women in Canada for more than 30 years.  DAWN has a mandate to represent the concerns of disAbled women and girls to a range of stakeholders at the Federal, Provincial/Territorial and Municipal levels. DAWN Canada’s vision is to end the poverty, isolation, discrimination and violence experienced by women with disabilities and Deaf women and to ensure that they get the services and supports that they need.

Research and Communications Assistant

 

Eligibility

To apply, you must be

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • Registered as a full-time student during the last school year;
  • Intending to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP, vocational or technical program;
  • A Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

 

Tasks and Responsibilities:

As the Research and Communications Assistant, you will support the Senior Projects Manager and the Communications Coordinator in their tasks over the summer in both official languages

 

Communications duties:

  • Support website development and updates including adding new resources
  • Assist with social media content development and engagement
  • Support the production of the quarterly newsletter (proofreading, formatting, etc.)
  • Update our media list and support our media relations
  • Do the market research (statistics, social media platforms, opportunities)
  • Create engaging layouts for print/online publications and PowerPoint presentations as required
  • Collaborate with the rest of the team to create new engaging content
  • Other duties as required

 

Research duties:

  • Edit the current research projects on violence against women with disabilities and Deaf women and programming for girls with disabilities and Deaf girls
  • Support the final national analysis of those researches
  • Identify opportunities for research collaborations and initiatives by monitoring and analysing the current and past issues, trends and concerns of women and girls with disabilities and Deaf women and girls
  • Monitor and track political and policy developments that might affect women and girls with disabilities and Deaf women and girls
  • Support the development of briefs, letters and other advocacy tools
  • Support the writing of research report and other research-driven materials and products
  • Coordinate the dissemination of our finalized researches

 

Qualifications and Demonstrated Skills:

  • Studies in communications, gender studies, sociology, or relevant fields
  • Well organized, detail oriented and creative
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good research and analytical skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both official languages as we work in both English and French
  • A team player; able to effectively interact with a wide variety of people
  • Knowledge of the issues affecting women with disabilities and Deaf women in Canada
  • Strong understanding of how marginalized social statuses intersect with disability resulting in multiple barriers to inclusion in society
  • Strong computer skills (Office suite), knowledge of websites and social media tools (Facebook, Twitter)
  • Knowledge of the Adobe creative suite is an asset
  • Experience in the non-profit sector is an asset
