Recap of our event, March with Us in Montreal in March 2024

As we celebrate DAWN Canada's 39th anniversary on June 22, 2024, we reflect on our remarkable journey and achievements.

Notably, our landmark event last spring in Montreal/ Tio'Tia:ke brought together over 80 professionals, partners, and allies from the National Feminist Disability community across the nation, providing a platform for dialogue and fostering connections within the community. This milestone stands as a testament to our enduring commitment to the feminist disability community and serves as a springboard for greater achievements as we begin the countdown to our 40th anniversary next year.

 

The event, "March with Us in Montreal in March," was a vibrant celebration of our shared goals and accomplishments. It offered a rich tapestry of dialogue, connection, and innovation within our community.

The gathering also marked the inauguration of the Hummingbird Feminist Disability Coalition, the 2023 Hummingbird Awards Ceremony, and a one-day Policy Forum featuring several pioneering panels. This special event provided a vital platform for dialogue and an opportunity to foster deeper conversations and connections across the feminist disability community.

One-Day Policy Forum 

The event kicked off with a one-day policy forum, with impactful panels discussing topics on accessibility standards, Intersectional policies regarding livelihoods, on empowering perspectives and Black women leading intersectional change, issues on Gender-Based violence, and DAWN’s work on human rights around the world.

Inauguration of the Hummingbird Feminist Disability Coalition 

We had the great pleasure of inaugurating the Hummingbird Feminist Disability Coalition (HFDC), our new initiative gearing up for its official launch this summer!  

The HFDC is on a mission to empower women, girls, trans, two-spirit, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals to become influential leaders and advocates within their communities. By fostering peer support, providing resources, and encouraging active engagement, HFDC aims to create a supportive environment where everyone's voice is heard, valued, and empowered to drive change wherever they are on their journey.  

Join us in our vision to cultivate a society where diversity is celebrated, discrimination is eradicated, and every individual has the opportunity to create meaningful change.

2023 Hummingbird Awards Ceremony

The event concluded with the announcement of the recipients of our 2023 Hummingbird Awards,  

The Hummingbird Awards honor the ongoing and vital efforts of women who have made significant contributions to advancing the rights and enhancing the lives of disabled and/or Deaf women, girls, and gender-diverse people with disabilities. It is both an honor and a responsibility to continue the advocacy work for which they have been acknowledged. 

This year, two awards were presented:  

  • Sandra Pronteau, a lifelong advocate for marginalized communities, especially Indigenous individuals with disabilities, and a board member of both the Aboriginal Women Action Network and the Disability Foundation Canada, was honored with the Individual Award for her unwavering dedication to centering the needs of women, girls, and gender-diverse people with disabilities. 
  • The Live Work Well Research Centre at the University of Guelph was recognized with the Organizational Award for the impact of their contribution on our research and framework, highlighting the importance of economic health and accessibility for women, girls and gender-diverse people with disabilities.
