Bonnie Brayton, CEO of DAWN Canada, delivered an intuitive presentation during a multi-day Women’s Advocates training session held at the Unifor Family Education Centre in Port Elgin, Ont.
Speaking on Root Resilience, Root Change, Root Justice – DAWN Canada’s ten-year vision for systemic transformation – Brayton outlined the organization’s major commitments to women in Canada. She connected this long-term vision to broader national and global efforts, including the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), both of which affirm that meaningful, sustained change requires a decade-long commitment.
Brayton’s presentation focused on the intersections of disability and intimate partner violence (IPV), drawing particular attention to barriers faced by women living with disabilities. She emphasized the critical need for advocates and policymakers to understand these intersections in order to effectively respond to and prevent violence.
In her presentation, she also addressed existing policy gaps and the urgency of improving data collection through an intersectional lens. She introduced an impact pathway from resilience to justice, illustrating how systems must evolve to fully support women who face both gender-based violence and disability-related barriers.
