Welcome to DAWN Canada's website,
our online home!
DAWN Canada is a national organization controlled by and
comprised of women who self-identify as Women with disAbilities.
We are from all backgrounds and all disAbilities. We are a feminist organization working to achieve
control over our lives and end the stereotype that labels us
dependent burdens on society. Our Network began in 1985.
Our Society Status was received in 1992.
Has your shelter taken part in our survey? It's not too late.
From Victoria, B.C., to Stephenville, Nfld., women’s shelters all over Canada are participating in the National Accessibility and Accommodation Survey (NAAS).
In less than two months, almost 50 shelters have completed the survey. These participating shelters have come from all ten provinces, both rural and urban communities, and include native women's shelters.
Shelters or transition houses across Canada have been sent a survey to determine whether they are accessible to women with all types of disabilities. As shelters see on a daily basis, violence against women with disabilities is more frequent than violence against non-disabled women. Our goal is to work together with shelters to make 100 per cent accessibility and accommodation for women with disabilities a reality. Please contact Sujata Dey at assistant@dawncanada.net, or 1-866-688-3296 for more information. Shelters have until August 12th to respond.

For more information, click here. The results of the survey will be presented by the DisAbled Women’s Network of Canada during the First World Conference of Women's Shelters in Edmonton, Sept. 8-11, 2008.

Our featured website for September: Access to Justice Network
The Access to Justice Network (ACJNet) is an electronic community that brings together people, information, and educational resources on justice and legal issues of interest to Canadians. It uses new technologies to create and distribute products and services and to facilitate broad base consultations. ACJNet is the only nationwide service dedicated to making law and justice resources available to all Canadians in either official language.
Here is ACJNet’s website address: http://www.acjnet.org/splash/default.aspx
